Favoring solutions that respect the environment
Austria

Favoring solutions that respect the environment means optimizing exisiting solutions rather than innovating from the start. ISOVER helps to renovate the first renovation project that was completed according to "passive house" standards, respecting international guidelines for climate protection. Single-family home renovation for higher quality interior atmosphere, 100% reduction in CO2, and increase is usage of natural light. Isover helps to renovate the first renovation project that was completed according to "passive house" standards, respecting international guidelines for climate protection. Single-family home renovation for higher quality interior atmosphere, 100% reduction in CO2, and increase is usage of natural light.
To expand this single family home on the outskirts of Linz, it was decided, for budgetary reasons, to renovate and add an additional level rather than to construct a new building. The main challenge consisted of bringing the buidling's outer envelope up to the standard of "passive house". From the comfort standpoint, the renovation facilitated a higher quality interior atmosphere by limiting exposure to dust and pollen, condensation, mold and noise pollution. A 100% reduction in CO2 emissions was possible as all electrical energy was supplied by a photovoltaic device using eco-electricity. Finally, the creation of large bay windows improved the distribution of natural light throughout the house. Wooden frame construction was preferred to solid construction. Finishing and detail work was important to avoid causing thermal bridges. The surface temperature of the exterior envelope is thus optimized with the even dispersion of heat. The installation of a controlled ventilation system made it possible to considerably improve interior comfort. The final result corresponds to the initial energy objectives, with the total energy costs and maintenance of the heating system being less than just the cost of the building maintenance prior to renovation.
