Modernization and conversion of a 1903 building in Stuttgart to a family residence.
Germany

ISOVER provides insulation solutions for the modernization and conversion of a 1903 building in Stuttgart to a family residence. This previous maid quarters has been completely transformed to a beautiful and energy efficient living quarters. This project featured in the Isover Energy Efficiency Awards 2009.
The project comprised the modernization and conversion of a 1903 building in Stuttgart West. The upper two stories within the roof space, which provided panoramic views across the city, were available for conversion. The 1st roof storey had originally contained 7 bedrooms, used in earlier times as maid servant’s quarters, but latterly abandoned and in a dilapidated state. In the 2nd roof storey, the developers found an empty area, used previously as a laundry room. With the whole of the fabric of the building neglected internally and externally, and the roof leaking in many places, the building was badly in need of complete refurbishment, including the provision of modern energy efficiency measures. The developers wanted to create a spacious city dwelling in the popular and urban district of Stuttgart West. The requirements were clearly stated: a high quality living space, a view, freedom, spaciousness and room for movement. With ceiling heights barely 2 metres in places, however, the first priority in this extensive refurbishment was to raise the complete roof in order to create a reasonable living space. For financial reasons, the architect decided against demolition and rebuilding, and took on the task of finding a carpenter to raise the height of the roof trusses, a job made even more difficult by the city centre location, pedestrian traffic and bus stop directly in front of the building.
