ISOVER provides insulation solutions inside and out for this combination of offices and dwellings in Ludwigshafen, Germany. This builidng from 1903 presented the challenge of only being able to insulate of the the building's facades from the interior while carrying out studies for moisture and temperature at the same time.
This project involved the renovation of two old 1903 residential and commercial buildings, containing 7 dwellings and 2 offices. This was an experimental project in terms of energy efficiency, as the buldings had listed façades facing the street and conse¬quently thermal insulation could only be installed from the inside. The challenge was to carry out a study of temperature and damp measurements on the external walls, whilst the renovation was underway. The two buildings share some services. In view of the limited floor area in the basement of house no.21, a single gas-fired central heating system with condensing boiler has been installed in house no.19, to serve both buildings. The roof of house no. 21 was suit¬able for mounting solar heating panels for the domestic hot water system, whilst the reservoir for the system has been placed in the basement of house no 19. Thus, a permanent heating solution has been found using single systems to heat the two independent buildings, saving the owners both cost and energy.
