ISOVER provides insulation solutions for the renovation of a spanish duplex nearly 100 years old. Demonstrating its versitile product line, ISOVER was so successful with his renovation that the other tenants have requested similar renovations for their homes. This project featured in the ISOVER Energy Efficiency Awards 2009.
The client wanted to double the habitable area of his house, converting an attic in a state of structural and functional disrepair, into a modern duplex offering the latest facilities and comfort standards. It was essential to reduce the enormous heat loss due to the building’s low energy efficiency standards, and to address major noise problems associated with the nearby Gran Via, one of Madrid’s main streets. In addition, the listed building, dating back to 1925, was located in the middle of a heritage area. It was therefore necessary to adapt an almost 100-year old building to suit the modern lifestyle. Renovating a building of great historical and artistic value, after it has suffered serious structural damage, requires working on limited areas in an almost surgical way, using special materials which suit the unusual requirements. The biggest challenge in expanding the property was replacing the outer covering with a high efficiency waterproof membrane, which required great care. At the same time, the use of the climatic elements, such as wind and sun, has been maximised, with wind used for ventilation and sunlight being captured through openings on the south side. By reducing condensation and exposure to dust, pollution and noise, the renovation has substantially improved indoor air quality and comfort.
