Thermal comfort
The feeling of comfort is a mixture of sensations that varies depending on the person, lifestyle and habits. However, in winter, when coming in from an outside temperature of –5°C to an inside temperature of 20 °C, everyone feels a “warm sensation” and, in the summer, when coming in from an outside temperature of 35 °C to an inside temperature of 20 °C, there is a genuine “cool sensation”.
Thermal comfort mainly concerns the interior temperature of rooms, maintaining and distributing it evenly, and the quality of the air (humidity rate, purity, healthiness). The solution for comfort in winter and summer is a very high resistance thermal insulation of all surfaces (including the windows) combined with ventilation adapted to the season, perfect air tightness to avoid the parasite air input and the building’s good thermal inertia.
Insulation prevents the cold wall effect
The feeling of discomfort appears when there is a difference of more than 3°C between the interior air temperature and the temperature of the walls. This is called the “cold wall effect”.
In winter, insulation removes the “cold wall effect”. It keeps surfaces of the walls hotter, limits condensation on the walls and improves the temperature felt in the room (homogeneous temperature in the volume).
Both in the summer and in the winter, insulation acts as a barrier and limits heat transfers. It supports the maintenance of comfortable temperatures in all points of the house.
Insulation also brings other essential benefits.
Thermal insulation provides space
To have well insulated walls and windows saves space because it makes it possible to place a desk or a sofa in the vicinity without it being likely to be cold. Similarly, to walk on a non insulated floor causes a feeling of “cold feet”.
Energy savings
Direct energy savings and also savings related to heating equipment investments are important. Obviously, the dimensioning of heating equipment can only be carried out once the required level of insulation is defined. The choice of expensive equipment for a non-insulated house will appear expensive once the insulation is installed, because it is oversized and not adapted.
Internal air quality
A comfortable house with thermal insulation, air tightness and ventilation will guarantee new and healthy air, without any risk of disease related to non-controlled ambient moisture.
Thermal insulation guarantees durability of the building
Home insulation in combination with good ventilation and air tightness, bring to the building a longevity which avoids all the following nuisances : moisture that generates moulds and often irreversible disorders such as saltpetre on the walls, condensation on the cold parts of the building, spores in the interior air, rotting of the timber, etc.
